Interview and Giveaway: Kris DeLake

Please join me in welcoming Kris DeLake to Debbie's Book Bag today! Kris is here to promote her latest release, the first book in the Assassin's Guild series, Assassin's in Love. The publisher is sponsoring a giveaway for two copies of Kris' book, see details at the end of the post.

DEB: Kris, this is the first time you've been with us here at Debbie's Book Bag. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

KRIS: Hi, Debbie. Thanks for asking me to participate on the blog. A little about myself, huh? Well, I'm an award-winning bestselling writer under a variety of names in a variety of genres. Kris DeLake is a new pen name, and an experiment in a new style. If folks want to find out more about me, they can check out my Kris DeLake website at www.krisdelake.com

DEB: Tell us about your latest release, Assassins in Love. Is this a single title, a part of a series, etc.

KRIS: Assassins in Love is the first book in a series about the Assassins Guild, set in the far future.

DEB: What made you decide to go with a futuristic society? Is this one more of a sci-fi romance, paranormal romance or something different?

KRIS: This one mixes every genre I can think of. Seriously, it's space opera with a romance front and center. Since it's space opera, it has a thriller structure with a romance at its core.

DEB: What kind of research did you do for this novel? Were there specific aspects of the book that you needed more information for?

KRIS: Since under my real name, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, I spent 30 years in the science fiction field, I really didn't have to do any research. I had already done it.

DEB: Do you have to have specific things in place to write comfortably? A quiet house, a certain drink etc.

KRIS: I can write anywhere. I prefer to write in my office, with my cats nearby and a cup of tea in hand

DEB: How did you did you feel when you got the word that your first book would be published? What was your reaction...

KRIS: I was stunned when I got word about my first book. It was a long time ago, and I still remember how excited and floored I was. It's an experience a writer never forgets.

DEB: Do you have advice for new writers?

KRIS: The most important thing you have isn't talent or "ability." It's drive. You need a work ethic. You need to work hard. Writing is a craft, which means you can learn it. But you have to put the time into it. The other thing you need to learn besides the actual storytelling skill is business. Writers disappear from this career all the time because they don't know how to run a small business. You have to learn that as well as all the creative stuff.

DEB: What are you working on right now?

KRIS: I am writing the next Assassins book, about Rikki's friend Jack.

DEB: Do you have a favorite author or genre? What do you read when you have the opportunity?

KRIS: I read everything all the time. I read fiction, nonfiction, news, magazines, you name it. I do have a special fondness for short stories, however, so I read a lot of those.
