Synopsis:

While Morganville, Texas, is often a troubled town, Claire Danvers and her friends are looking forward to coming home. But the Morganville they return to isn’t the one they know; it’s become a different place—a deadly one…

Something drastic has happened in Morganville while Claire and her friends were away. The town looks cleaner and happier than they’ve ever seen it before, but when their incoming group is arrested and separated—vampires from humans—they realize that the changes definitely aren’t for the better.

It seems that an organization called the Daylight Foundation has offered the population of Morganville something they’ve never had: hope of a vampire-free future. And while it sounds like salvation—even for the vampires themselves—the truth is far more sinister and deadly.

Now, Claire, Shane and Eve need to find a way to break their friends out of Daylighter custody, before the vampires of Morganville meet their untimely end…

Thoughts:

It's the end of a journey. Fifteen books in we are coming to the end of Morganville Vampire series, by iconic author, Rachel Caine. Caine is a staple in the young adult paranormal genre and this is a series that will live on though, Daylighters is the official last book in the series. Readers who have been there from the beginning will be happy and sad all at the same time. Happy with this wonderfully written closer and sad to see the ride end. Caine has written a conclusion that is truly worthy of the name. She wraps up the series in true form, with emotion, action and plenty of alive and undead characters. You don't want to miss it!

This is one of my favorite young adult series out there. The Morganville Vampire series began in 2006 with Glass Houses, where readers met Claire Danvers, a young girl in a desperate situation. She moves into an off campus house with a vampire, a ghost, and an angry human boy. That's what started it all. Now fifteen books later, Caine brings readers the conclusion of the series. Daylighters is an action packed novel that will have readers on the edge of their seats from the first to last page. I admit I was sorry to see the series end. It has been such a good one. Lots of great characters, non-stop action and a little romance. It had all the qualities I look for in a good YA read, in every book.

Daylighters was no exception to the rule. It starts out fast and doesn't slow down. I was wondering how Caine would pull it all together and give readers a gripping ending, but I shouldn't have been surprised that she exceeded even my expectations. While Claire and her friends have been away Morganville has changed. The Daylighter Foundation has rounded up all the vampires and is forcing a cure on them that has less than favorable results. On the surface getting rid of the vampires sounds like a good thing. But there's a whole lot more going on that just a group of do-gooders hoping to help out a small vampire infested town. I loved the way Caine gives the reader a very well themed and written addition to the series while still tidying up all the loose ends and creating an ending that will blow their minds. The idea that Claire would want to return Moganville to how it was seems almost ludicrous in the beginning, but that's the beauty of it.

I think Caine showed readers what character development is all about in this novel. She began writing these characters with a naivety about them that has gradual changed. They've gone from kids to adults and learned so much about themselves and each other over the course of the series, that looking at them in Daylighters readers can see and understand how they think and why everything means so much to them. Claire was a naive young girl in the beginning now she is a confident and resourceful young woman. Every single character has shown some kind of growth, from Michael in his role as a ghost to Eve and who she wants to be, all the way to the vampires that made an appearance like Amalie. It was very well done and amazing to read.

A lot happens in this one that I totally did not expect but I was glad for that. It made this final book exciting and unpredictable. I think it's interesting that Caine touches on the fact that there gray areas in every aspect of life and how the decisions we make put us one side or another of many different kinds of conflict, whether in society or in our hearts. A monster you know is somehow better than one you don't. I think Claire learns a lot about the fact that everything is not all cut and dried and that's what life is all about.

I don't want to give too much away on this one, because it is such an amazing conclusion to the series, but suffice it to say that Caine has hit it out of the park with this one. Goodbye, Morganville. You will be missed!

I'm giving this one a well deserved 5 out of 5 apples from my book bag!
