Synopsis:

In the latest Sugarland Blue novel, Detective Tonio Salvatore always puts his job first—until a beautiful piece of trouble has him questioning the rules he’s sworn to live by…

Tonio knows that loneliness is the price he has to pay to avoid being hurt again. But the strictly by-the-book cop never expected to be blindsided by a woman who pulls him right out of his self-imposed isolation.

Angel Silva isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks—she’s on the wrong side of the law. She’s desperate to break free from her dangerous brother and his gang, but when a sexy new recruit joins them, Angel is more trapped than ever—because the ruthless Tonio Reyes isn’t what he seems. When she discovers the man she’s falling for is one of Sugarland’s finest, she’s forced to go on the run.

Instead of taking Angel into custody, Tonio finds himself risking his career to keep her safe. And as the beautiful woman tears down all his defenses, Tonio realizes he’ll risk his very life to set her free.

Thoughts:

Jo Davis knows how to write suspense and she has a knack for getting into the heads of the guys and gals in blue. The Sugarland Blue series continues with Davis' latest book, On the Run. Readers who are looking for a great romantic suspense series, featuring the police will love this one. You get the gritty, raw stories from the street, but you also get the loyalty and unity of the squad. This book is a great combination of love and war, as Tonio goes undercover and finds that he might have gone from the frying pan to the fire when he falls for the bad guys, sister! Explosive...

On the Run continues the story of Sugarland's finest and Jo Davis is at her best when she lets the story lead her. My one peeve about this whole book happens on the very first page. The prologue is really the end instead of the beginning. Then readers go back in time and get the rest of the story. I didn't need to know how it ended. It's a romantic suspense novel, I was already clued in and thought this was unnecessary and it took a little bit of the edge away from the story. It wasn't a deal breaker, but to happen at the very start of the book, made it a little disappointing.

Davis is always a great author though, and the story itself went a long way toward redeeming itself. Having read about Tonio in previous books in the series, I knew his story would be intense. He is just the sort of guy who would find the good in just about any situation and he finds the good beneath the harsh demeanor and circumstances surrounding Angel. He's undercover, and he doesn't need to get too close, but he just can't help himself. Tonio was a great character and I thought Davis did a great job of making this story about him believable. Not many cops would fall for the enemy and I liked that take on the situation.

Angel was not in a good place, but as a reader and in real life, I know that sometimes it takes the love of a good man or woman to turn someone around and Davis obviously knew this too. You put one hard nosed cop up against a hard nosed perp and you get a really intense relationship, inside and outside the bedroom. Angel was just what Tonio needed. But she was in trouble and he was bound and determined to protect her. He took protect and serve seriously and it really worked in this book.

Jo Davis is always great at making her books flow naturally. I didn't get the feeling that anything she wrote in this book was just for show or filler. Everything had a purpose. Every scene was well thought out, even the romance scenes which were really hot, by the way. I liked the fact that previous characters were important in this one and that the Sugarland crew was once again there for each other and for Angel. Great storytelling.

Bottom Line:

A lot of action, a lot of intensity and plenty of hot loving! This book is a very good addition to the series, but I did not like the prologue. The end was literally at the beginning. I don't like the back tracking thing. It's a romantic suspense book, we know what is going to happen in a sense, but we don't need it spelled out for us. Beyond that pet peeve it was a good book.

On the Run is available NOW from your favorite bookseller.

I'm giving this one 4 out of 5 apples from my book bag!
