Please join me in welcoming Jessica Clare (Jill Myles) to Debbie's Book Bag today. Jessica is guest posting today to promote her latest book, The Girls Guide to (Man) Hunting. I asked Jessica why she chose revenge as a motive for her book and this is what she had to say. The publisher is sponsoring a giveaway for one copy of Jessica's book, see details at the end of the post.
Why
Revenge?
There’s
something so delicious about a role reversal in romance. We don’t think twice
if a hero is a rake and sleeps around. We don’t think anything of it if he’s
had several failed relationships. And the hero going after sexy revenge on the
heroine? That’s a pretty standard plot.
But
it’s always a different story when it’s the heroine. And it’s especially
different when it’s a Southern heroine. I’m from the South myself, born and
raised. And there’s a very common expectation about Southern women – that we
should be polite, gracious, charming, and genteel at all times.
How
freaking boring.
I
first had the idea for Miranda Hill when brainstorming with a friend. In my
mind, Miranda was stuck in her small Texas
town. While there’s a lot of good things about living in a small town, there
are also a lot of bad things. Like gossip. And I wanted Miranda to suffer from
gossip. What better than a set of dirty photos and a legendary ex-boyfriend?
Her bad reputation was certainly cemented by that. It’s not easy to ignore
gossip about someone when you run into them every day, after all.
And
in my mind, Miranda was going to fall back in love with that first boyfriend.
I’d never done a reunited couple story before and wanted to try it out. But
when I played out scenarios between Miranda and her hero, Dane, things weren’t
going as planned.
Every
scenario I could think of involved Miranda being spitting mad at him. Why would
she ever talk to this man again? He’d ruined her life.
Cue
the female rake plot. Miranda’s not really a rake – but she’s so single-minded
and determined in her decision to get back at Dane that she’ll use every weapon
in her arsenal. Seducing him is all part of her grand plan to ruin his life
like he ruined hers. It was really fun to twist the trope a little and make the
heroine the seducer with revenge in mind, rather than the hero. And it was
really fun to write Miranda’s seductive attempts to get Dane’s attention (not
all of them successful) on a wilderness survival trip when Dane’s supposed to
be doing anything but paying attention to her.
But
somehow, they can’t manage to keep their hands off of each other.
Anyhow,
it was a blast to write. Female rakes? Girls with revenge on their minds? Lots
of hot sex? Sounds like fun to me.

Revenge is one of my favorite themes to read about, especially when reuniting a couple. It's true that's it's unusual for it to be the girl seeking revenge. Can't wait to read this. Thanks!

That is a little different. A small-town Southern girl with revenge on her mind. Should be twisted enough to raise some eyebrows. Thanks for offering us a copy.
