Phillip Carter on the WEB: Philip Carter is a bit of an enigma. You can't find out much information about him because the name is a pseudonym for an internationally acclaimed espionage writer. At this point Simon & Schuster remains closed-lipped about the author's identity... a mystery in itself!

Barnes & Noble offers a short excerpt video on their purchase page (see Barnes & Noble link above)

Synopsis (Book Blurb):

"They didn't have to kill him... he never drank from the altar of bones."

The cryptic words of a murdered homeless woman in present-day San Francisco unlock a decades-buried secret that changed history - and ignite a lightening-fast game of cat-and-mouse from the winding streets of Paris to the faded palaces of Budapest to the frozen forests of Siberia.

"You will be the Keeper of the altar of bones... and your sacred duty will be to keep it hidden forever from the world."

Zoe Dmitroff is told to trust no one in the deadly game she's inherited, but she has no choice but to partner up with ex Special Ops Ry O'Malley, whose father's past is the gateway to understanding this lethal enigma. Pursuing the deadly secret unlocks shocking revelations which make them the target of enemies ranging from the Russian mob to high-ranking officials on Capital Hill to privately trained assassins. Betrayal awaits them at every turn as they race to solve the riddle behind an ancient religious icon. A priceless artifact worth killing for. The dark and unimaginable promise of a power that could change the world as we know it.

Thoughts:

Author Philip Carter is indeed an enigma, all the information available for readers to find out about him is that the name is a pseudonym for a internationally renowned writer, which creates another mystery in itself. Carter, whoever he may be, has crafted a novel that is suspenseful, mysterious and definitely thrilling. Readers will be swept away by this sweeping novel that will captivate even the most staid of readers.

When Zoe Dmitroff receives a cryptic letter from her grandmother, she is shocked and full of questions. Somewhere in the frozen tundra of Siberia lies a frozen lake, with a waterfall that hides a sacred cave. Inside the caves lies the altar of bones, a veritable fountain of youth, and more questions than answers. Zoe's family has cared for the altar and it's secrets for generations, passed down from mother to daughter. Now Zoe is the "keeper" of the altar and she is charged to guard it's secrets with her life. Zoe sets off on a whirlwind adventure with ex-DEA agent Ry O'Malley in tow. Chased by the Russian mob, a femme fatale and top government officials, it's up to Zoe and Ry to figure out the secrets of the altar and how this religious relic could change the world.

Philip Carter gives readers a book that is full of all things that make a great thriller: secrets, betrayal, lost treasure, and even a touch of the supernatural. This book has a little bit of everything and will appeal to a wide range of readers, especially those who are interested in political intrigue and conspiracy theories. When I read a good thriller I always speculate as to whether I think it is plausible for this scenario to play out in the real world. There were definitely parts of this one that fit the bill and others that were a bit of a stretch for me.

The two main characters Zoe and Ry were very well developed and readers will find them both easy to identify with and fun to read about. Carter, manages to even throw in a bit of romance toward the end of the book, that I felt really added to the overall appeal of the novel, at least from a woman's perspective. Zoe had been warned that men would try to entice her, tempt her and eventually steal the secret if she allowed it to happen. Zoe was a really strong character but she also showed vulnerability in the fact that she continually questioned Ry's feelings for her. She was unsure of herself in some ways.

Ry on the other hand was exactly what readers would expect from a former Special Ops agent. He was tough, strong and very determined. He was the kind of character that knew exactly what he wanted and he went for it on a daily basis. He did not do things half way and that was one of the traits that I really liked about him. When he set his mind to something, that something got done or else. He was very dependable and provided a sense of security to the book. The chemistry between Ry and Zoe was kept on the down low for most of the book, but ramps up toward the end.

This book is chalk full of car chases and fights. It was a bit over the top when it came to the action scenes. But, all of that kept to the theme of the book and created a really blistering pace. It's one of the those books you find yourself speeding up in your reading. The more the action the faster you read. It was definitely a page-turner.

There were lots of idea's and theories for readers to ponder from presidential assassinations to the immortality and what that would mean for our current society. I couldn't help but theorize as to who the writer of this book could be as I read. There were elements of several different writers present in my opinion. It put me in the mind of Dan Brown in some ways and Tom Clancy in others. We may not know who Philip Carter is, but it's easy to tell, this isn't his first go-round as a writer. The book is exceptionally well written. I recommend this one to thriller readers as well those who are just interested in a good old fashioned treasure hunt.

Excerpt from
Highland Heat

Synopsis (Book Blurb):

RUINED, BETRAYED AND BANISHED...

As brave as she is impulsive, Deidre Chattan's tendency to follow her heart and not her head has finally tarnished her reputation beyond repair. But when powerful Highland Laird Quinton Cameron finds her, he could care less about her past - it's her future he's about to change...

BUT IT'S NEVER TOO LATE FOR REDEMPTION...

From the moment Quinton sets eyes on Deidre Chattan, rational thought vanishes, for in her eyes he sees a fiery spirit that matches his own and he'll be damned if he'll let such a wild Scottish rose wither under the weight of a nun's habit...

With nothing to lose, Deidre and Quinton band together to protect king and crown. But what they can accomplish alone is nothing compared to what they can build with their passion for each other...

Thoughts:

The third book in Mary Wine's Highlander series,
Highland Heat is full of the vivid imagery of Scotland and complex, captivating characters. Readers will fall in love with fiery heroine, Deidre Chattan and powerful, hero Quinton Cameron. Highland Heat as the name implies is full of passion and romance that will leave readers panting for more. Wine's ability to get into the minds and hearts of her Highland characters sets the bar high for other historical romance novelists.

Deidre Chattan is a ruined woman. A misguided love affair with a man from a rival clan nearly destroyed her life. Now, banished to a convent Deidre's passionate spirit is hard to hold down. When the Queen of Scotland comes to convent in desperation, Deidre embarks on a mission to save the queen and draw her pursuers in another direction. What she doesn't expect is Highland Laird Quinton Cameron. Quinton has spent much of his time trying to keep the rival clans from warring with each other. His loyalty to king and country runs deep as he plans to help the queen escape. Then he encounters Deidre and his plans are totally derailed. Will the two be able to conquer the passion they have for life and each other? Or will they be consumed by the flames of desire and war?

Deirdre Chattan is a character we have seen before in the series. But, only as a minor character.
Highland Heat brings her into sharp focus with her uncanny wit and stubborn attitude. She is determined to regain her honor despite her letting her heart rule her head in the past. Wine's character development in this book is very well done. Deidre is portrayed in the vein of most Highland women. She is a warrior in heart and mind. She is loyal to her family, her clan and her king. She has a very passionate nature which is what tends to get her into trouble.

I loved the way that the author gets away from the cliche' "Opposites attract!," with this one. These two main characters could not have been more alike. Quinton Cameron is a Highland Laird. He is fierce and rugged and full of spirit and raw power. His own passionate nature rivals that of Deidre in every way. He is used to getting what he wants and he wants her. But, she isn't about to give over that easily. The tension that simmers between these characters is only second to the absolutely searing passion they share. They fight about as much as they love, which makes for a great story. Wine gives us the perfect hero in Quinton. He is gruff and sharp in some ways and very gentle and vulnerable in others.

This book really packs a romantic punch. If you are looking for a tame romance, this probably isn't it! I loved the romantic scenes in the book and thought they were tastefully done. But, they are not for the faint of heart or for younger readers. This book is for passionate women who love to read about scorching love that takes the characters by surprise and fills the reader with longing. I loved the heat in this one and almost had to fan myself a couple of times LOL...

Wine has a great affinity for showing the reader what Scotland is like. Being of Scottish ancestry I am always looking to see how a writer is able to convey what Scotland is all about. Wine does an excellent job of portraying Scotland in the 1400's. The men and women were fierce and determined, warriors. The places they lived were not the easiest and the situations they faced were difficult. Wine's descriptions of the scenery and the people are very well written giving the reader a sense of being a part of the story, seeing it through the eyes of the character.

I would recommend this one to historical romance lovers and those who love Highland characters. Wine does such a wonderful job of bringing them to life. This is a book filled with loyalty and love and lots of passion. Not one you want to miss!

Interview and Giveaway: Mary Wine

Please join me in welcoming Mary Wine back to Debbie's Book Bag! Mary is joining us today to remote her latest release, Highland Heat. Sourcebooks has been kind enough to sponsor a giveaway for two copies of Mary's book, please see the end of the post for details.

DEB: Mary, tell us what you’ve been up to since you were here last?
MW: War with the dust bunnies, they’ve regrouped…oh, sorry. Well I’ve been hatching a lot of new ideas. I was between contracts there and doing submissions, which for a writer means opening up her imagination. I’ve just finished a new Highlander book which is book one in a three book saga. Look for it next year. After that, I’m going to Victorian England for a Steam Punk romance.

DEB: Tell us a little about your latest book, Highland Heat? Is this book a single title or part of a series?
MW: Highland heat is the follow up to Highland HellCat. It’s also linked to ‘To Conquer a Highlander’. Deidre Chattan is the eldest daughter who gave her heart to a man who betrayed her. Connor Lindsey was contracted to wed her but stole her sister Brina in Highland HellCat because he needed a wife who didn’t come with rumors clinging to her skirts. Deirdre went to the convent but not because she was to become a nun. Highland Heat is her story. This is a woman who’s had her heart broken but learns to love again.

DEB: Being of Scottish ancestry, I am always interested in what caused a writer to start writing about the Highlands. You have written several novels with this setting, what was your inspiration? What draws you to write about Highland men and women?
MW: Scotland is mystical. The land…the people…the music. I’ve enjoyed learning about the rich history of what shaped Scotland and it always gets me to thinking about the people who lived through it.

DEB: When you are researching for a particular book, what kinds of resources do you use and what is most helpful to you in finding out what you need to know for your novel?
MW: I begin with the internet. I also have an extensive library of costume books. I make many of the dresses from the era and wear them. The family has also been to more than one weekend camping trip with was period, meaning we used only what they had. Cooking, washing, entertainment…everything is period. I’ve learned a great deal by doing that.

DEB: A lot of my readers are writers and they are interested in how you first got started writing. What gave you the confidence to try to sell your manuscript?
MW: A kick in the tail from my husband? Well…partially true. I began writing one night, not sure why, only sure that I had to get that story out of my head. My tae kwon do master teaches us to finish what we begin, so I finished that book. Now, it wasn’t ready for publication and the art of writing is something I needed to learn a healthy respect for but I kept working on that book and submitted it. It was rejected several times over but I did get one offer and I took it. My advise, research the industry, don’t submit to an editor who doesn’t like the gene you’ve written in and don’t be above starting with a smaller press. But most important…finish the book.

DEB: Do you have advice for new writers?
MW: Write often. Finish a book and begin another one. Writing is a skill. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, after you finish a book, begin one in a different gene because you never know when you’ll get a rejection letter that asks if you have anything else.

DEB: My readers are also interested in you as a person. Name one pet peeve that you have?
MW: The parrot gets away with everything…I mean he throws food on the floor…sings as loud as he likes and still everyone tells him how cute he is.

DEB: Tell us one thing that readers may not know about you?
MW: MW: humm…I’m a second degree black belt in tae kwon do and an instructor.

DEB: If you could travel to any time period when and where would it be?
MW: So many to choose from! Hummm, love to see dinosaurs but don’t want to be eaten. Other than that, I’d love to visit but not stay in multiple time periods.

DEB: What books are you most interested in that are coming out in 2011?
MW: Highland Heat…I’ve been waiting for this one. I really enjoyed writing it, sort of needed to write it. I hope everyone enjoys it. Thanks for having me!

Excerpt (courtesy of Google Books) from Rugged and Relentless

Synopsis:

Roll into Hope Falls, Colorado, where three women are seeking mates to help them establish a sawmill. Evelyn Thompson never dreamed their husbands-for-hire ad would bring so many bachelors to their tiny town. How will she ever figure out which feller to choose? Jacob Granger, a logger-turned-bounty hunter, is hot on the trail of his brother's killer. When a clue leads him to Hope Falls, he has no choice but to pretend to court Miss Thompson while waiting for the killer to show his hand. Will Jacob's unexpected adoration of this sweet cook prompt him to speak vows before getting vengeance?

Thoughts:

Kelly Eileen Hake's latest release from Barbour Publishing gives readers a twist on the mail order bride storyline. In Rugged and Relentless it's the women who are doing the husband hunting instead of the men. This Christian Fiction western romance will have readers laughing out loud at the banter between the characters and staying up all night to see who the women will choose. Hake's ability to find a new twist on an old theme sets this novel apart.

Evie Thompson and three of her friends are on a mission to revitalize their town of Hope Falls, Colorado. Nearly a ghost town due to a mining accident these four determined women plan to turn the town around by building a new sawmill. The trouble is four women alone on the frontier is not the best scenario. So the women decide the need to find husbands and fast. When they place and advertisement for husbands for hire, they are blown away by the response. Hope Falls has become a haven for bachelors of all kinds trying to woo the women into marriage. Jake Granger is different from the rest. He is searching for his brother's killer and comes to Hope Falls believing that the killer will try to secure a rich wife by answering the ad. He pretends to court Evie as he waits for the killer to make his move. But will his emotions get in the way of revenge?

Hake has crafted a novel that will have western romance fans on the edge of their seats. As the suitors start to pile up the situation gets more and more comical. Hake uses humor to diffuse the darker elements of the story. Her twist on the mail order bride theme is unique and will hold the interest of many different types of readers. The introduction of a killer into the mix gives the story a sense of adventure and anxiousness. Hake did an excellent job of allowing the reader a glimpse at what it might have been like to be on the frontier where there are five men for every one woman.

I loved the overall premise of the book and it flowed very well. This is a great first novel in a series and readers will definitely tune in to see who the other women choose and what happens to them. Four headstrong and resourceful women is a big draw for those of us who don't want to be considered 'fragile' and unable to do things because of our gender. I thought the author did an excellent job of showing the strength of these four women, while also allowing them to be vulnerable. Evie's comments about being self conscious of her curves and going on a diet will allow readers to identify with her character, as well as her ability to cook.

I liked Hake's character Jake most of all. He was a strong and loyal man. But he had vengeance on his mind in this book. He intended to find his brother's killer no matter the cost. But when he came across four unprotected women on the frontier he was willing to put aside his own desires to protect them. His attraction to Evie is evident from their first meeting. I enjoyed the banter between the two of them as they were more likely to fight then anything else. That's always a good sign of romance in the making LOL...
