Synopsis (from the back of the book):
(A whole new side of Mr. Darcy...)
Mr. Darcy is the best big brother, generous to a fault, protective, (never teasing, and altogether incredible. Now if only he wasn't quite so overbearing as to scare all Georgiana's suitors away... But the matchmaking and intrigue-filled ballrooms of London are rife with rogues and fortune hunters, and Darcy is determined to keep those types away from shy, sweet Georgiana Darcy.
Under the guidance of her graceful sister-in-law and watchful eye of her over protective brother, Georgiana will have to make the transition to a confident young woman with her own engaging story to tell, instead of being simply, Mr. Darcy's little sister...
Thoughts:
One thing that always amazes me about Jane Austen variations is how the authors seem to get inside the heads of characters that they did not create and still give them the same voice that Austen did. I like this particular variation for several reasons. It picks up the story right after Pride and Prejudice with Jane and Elizabeth wedding Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy. Author, C. Allyn Pierson has taken the character of Georgiana, Mr. Darcy's sister and given her, her own story. We saw her a couple of times in Pride and Prejudice, but didn't really get to learn that much about her. Pierson easily steps into Mr. Darcy's character and shows us how he would react when Georgiana is ready to find love of her own.
Being a typical older brother, Darcy seems quite formidable to anyone who wants to court is younger sister. He intends to weed out the rogues and the fortune hunters, while in the process he scares away the legitimate suitors as well. Georgiana is frustrated and longs for a love of her own and happiness like Mr. Darcy has found with Elizabeth but her shyness stands in her way. This novel focuses on how Georgiana finds the confidence to go and find what she is looking for.
I liked the book a lot. This is exactly how I would have expected Mr. Darcy to act in this situation. He is full of bluster and taken aback by his sister's growth. To him she is still just his little sister. I have a younger brother instead of an older one, and I always wanted to have that protective person to look out for me, but I don't think I thought about how that might interfere with my plans... LOL!
