Guest Post: M.J. Rose

Author M.J. Rose is with us today at Debbie's Book Bag, promoting her latest book in the Reincarnationist series, The Book of Lost Fragrances. I recently reviewed M.J.'s book and really enjoyed it. I find it rather amazing how scent influences how we view our world. This guest post is about a specific fragrance in history.

M.J. Rose:  I've been fascinated with lost fragrances since long before I started writing The Book of Lost Fragrances... since I found a bottle of perfume on my great grandmother's dresser that had belonged to her mother in Russia. Here is one of those lost fragrances that stirs the senses and the imagination... (reasearched and described  with the help of the perfume writer  Dimitrios Dimitriadis)

VIOLET - AMBRE ROYAL

A French company established in 1810, Violet sold perfumes, cosmetics and toiletries to a discerning clientele, and in 1923 trademarked the name "Violay" in the US for export. Ambre Royal was a women's perfume created in 1900 which - as the name suggests - was an olfactory interpretation of vegetal amber. Rich and honey-like in nature, Ambre Royal has a citrus topnote, and heart which married white flowers with warmer resinous accords, soft spices, patchouli, labdanum and woods. Upon its release, it was presented in beautiful Galliard-designed flacons and shagreen boxes, but very few examples remain to this day. Parisian perfumery at its finest, Ambre Royal epitomises the type of scent being created at the turn of the last century.

My Mother has some exquisite perfume bottles that are of an unknown vintage. When you remove the stopper you can get a hint of times past.

I would love to read THE BOOK OF LOST FRAGRANCES thank you.

I've always thought fragrances an interested subject form the wearers to the makers.

Very interesting! My grandmother had some beautiful looking perfume bottles that you just don't see anymore, but the smell is something I don't miss:) Little too heavy for me, but they looked lovely!

I always enjoy reading what inspires an author to write a novel. I like to learn about the inspiration before reading the book and keep it in mind while reading it.

Thanks,

I've heard so many nice things about this book. I'd love to read it. They don't make things they way they once did. My grandmother had a few vintage perfume bottles that were absolutely beautiful. Please count me in.
